Great interest in r² kick-off event

23.06.2009, Bonn

The kick-off conference of the funding initiative "r² – Innovative technologies for resource efficiency – resource intensive production processes" took place on 23 June 2009 at the Collegium Leoninum in Bonn with about 80 participants.

At the beginning Michael Weber of the project partner Jülich and Dr. Renate Loskill (German Federal Ministry of Education and Research BMBF) talked about the political background of the r² funding initiative. Professor Martin Faulstich (Technical University Munich) in his capacity as chairman of the expert panel spoke about resource efficiency as a basis for a sustainable industrial society and Dr. Katrin Ostertag (Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI) as well as Dr. Jörg Woidasky (Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT) presented the integration and transfer project of the funding initiative.

The objective of this integration and transfer project is to strengthen innovation by connecting the funded joint projects to each other and externally. Guests associated with the r² funding initiative were also invited, for example the MaRess project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, and the German Materials Efficiency Agency dema, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics. Participants were then given the opportunity to get to know each other: The joint projects presented themselves. Every project presented its poster in "the market place" which provided an opportunity for lively discussions. This exchange is important as networking amongst the projects and with external partners can increase the innovativeness of the individual projects significantly.

Although some joint projects had not received formal approval at this stage they also used the opportunity to network. Overall, the kick-off of the r² funding initiative can be considered a success.
